Principle of Harmony of L E T – The Secret to World Peace

This is the gift of the Nomos Foundation ( ) to the world during the holiday season of peace at the end of the year 2012.  The gift is the Principle of Harmony of L E T, the secret to world peace.

Principle of Harmony:

The Secret To World Peace

L E T the other person decide about, and live, his or her own faith.

The Principle of Harmony of L E T can be expressed in a simple way:

B L T with Love

The Principle of Harmony of L E T is shown by the sandwich a woman made for her husband as he went off to work  B L T with Love.

Believe your faith with your all your heart, even that your faith is the only true faith and where other faiths differ they are in error.

Live your faith passionately. Learn its scriptures, worship in its way, follow the guidance of your faith, devote yourself to it and live by your faith.  Let your light shine, so others may see how your faith leads you to full life as a whole person.

Teach, preach and evangelize your faith, share your faith so others will know its beauty, power and truth… then Stop!

Do not try to force another to convert to your faith. That is not your job. It is God’s job. It is the job of the Divine Harmony. Whatever your understanding of the Divine Harmony, whether there is one god, or many gods, or if nothing is god or everything is god, conversion of other people to faith is between the Divine Harmony and that other person. It will happen in Divine Harmony’s time and in Divine Harmony’s way, not yours. Do not presume to do Divine Harmony’s job. Instead…

L E T the Divine Harmony change people’s hearts.  L E T the person decide for himself or herself in his or her own time and his or her own way.  True conversion is a decision between the individual and the Divine Harmony.  You are not involved, except to provide an example of the joy of life for those who live by your faith.

The attitude of L E T is the secret to harmonious pluralism in the world.  L E T is the secret to world peace.

L E T is the secret to harmonious pluralism and to the world’s religions, philosophies and ways of life nurturing global peace.  The global knowledge civilization makes the global knowledge economy work.  The global knowledge economy of billions of human creators and consumers and their machines connected together is based on individual, creative decisions and action.  The way for that to succeed is to nurture the individual to decide for himself or herself, rather than having government, the elite or religion decide for him or her, which crushes creativity.

It is an inescapably pluralistic world of many different ways with one global marketplace.  If we are to avoid violent pluralism, if harmonious pluralism is to prevail in the world, then the individual must be allowed and encouraged to decide for himself or herself, and others must be encouraged to let the individual decide for himself or herself.  We can help and nurture each other, and we must, but we must let the individual decide and live as he or she decides.  Religion has that nurturing role.  Conversion of others to your way is not your job.  The Divine Harmony and the individual are responsible for the conversion of the individual to some other belief, if and when that is to occur.  Love the other person.  Nurture the other person.  Let your light shine.  Watch the other person blossom in his or her way.  Rejoice in that, and wait patiently and peacefully for the conversion, if it will ever come.  Let the other person and the Divine Harmony decide.  In the meantime, nurture each other, as you each live life in your own way, and share life joyfully.

Nurture harmonious pluralism, global peace and prosperity. Do not be timid.  Defend yourself and your loved ones against global violence.   Nurture other people to live responsibly by their religion, but do not force others to live by your religion.  Do not count converts to your religion or take credit for their conversions.  Do not be like the Christian pastor who carved notches on his Bible.

This pastor would have an alter call in every church service and invite people to come forward and convert to Christianity.  Every time a person came forward and converted to Christianity, he would count the person as a soul he had won for Christ.  He would take his knife and carve a notch on his Bible for every person he had converted.  One day the Bible had so many notches, it fell apart.  The pastor bought a new Bible.  Sitting at his kitchen table that night, with his pen knife in hand, he could not figure out how to carve all the old notches on the Bible and have room for the new ones.  Finally he gave up in disgust and went to bed.  That night the Holy Spirit visited him in dream, and said, “you should not have carved a single notch on that Bible, because you did not convert a single one of those Christians.  I did

Conversion is God’s job.  Don’t presume to do God’s job.  Do not try to force or count converts.  You did not do it.  L E T the Holy Spirit change people’s hearts.  L E T each person decide for himself or herself if and when to convert to your religion.  In the meantime, let each person be a faithful follower of his or her religion or way of life.

Let the Christian be a Christian, let the Jew be a Jew, let the Muslim be a Muslim, let the Hindu be a Hindu, let the Buddhist be a Buddhist, let the Confucianist be a Confucianist, let the Taoist be a Taoist, let the Naturalist be a Naturalist, let the Humanist be a Humanist, let the Atheist be an Atheist, let the Agnostic be an Agnostic, and let all those who believe in their own religion, believe in their religion.  Let them be what they are.  Let them approach life in a way they take for granted is true, even if you think it is not true.  Let the world live in peace and prosperity.

Do not be an excuse for war and violence.  Do not use force.  It is not up to you to force other people to change to your religion or way of life.   Your God does not call on you to say to your neighbor, “I am so right about my faith, that I must force you to believe exactly as I do.”  The Divine Harmony will open people’s hearts to new faith.  It is a great evil in the world today to presume you can do that yourself, no matter what you believe.  Pray for non-believers, but do not try to force them to believe.

The greatest evil in the world today is forced one-wayism.  It is the opposite of harmonious pluralism.  It leads to violent pluralism.  It is a bar to global peace and prosperity for the people of the world.  It is a selfish justification for war and domination, for being in control of other people, instead of letting them decide for themselves.  It leads to a selfish government that serves its elite, rather than a servant government that serves the people and thereby earns the “Mandate of Heaven”.  It leads to a selfish church, instead of a servant church.  One day all people may believe one way.  That is a condition beyond human ability, that only the Divine Harmony can accomplish.  In the meantime, L E T, and live in global peace, prosperity and happiness, guided by intimate inner friendship with the Divine Harmony as each person understands the Divine Harmony through his or her religion or way of life.

Some people believe a supernatural event will occur to bring a united world to profound peace.  Christians believe Jesus Christ will come again, but are told they will not know the day or the hour when it will happen, and that they should not judge one another.  You should not presume to judge when such a supernatural event will happen, or try to hurry it to come. You cannot influence it.  It can only come in God’s time and God’s way, because it can only come by supernatural forces, not human intervention. Until then people should humbly seek the best human peace they can.  Until then, people of all faiths should live in harmonious pluralism, peace and prosperity with each other, and not try to control each other’s faith.  L E T the Divine Harmony change people’s hearts.

If other people are to change to your way, let them come to it on their own.  For their sake, let it be a genuine conversion, based on new belief they take for granted is true, so it will be real to them, not a fake and forced conversion.

Let you be you, and let them be them.  Live your example, but let them decide about their belief.  Believe in your own way; let them believe in their own way; and let the Divine Harmony change people’s hearts.

Pour your energy into learning and living your religion well.  Instead of pouring your energy into trying to convince others to convert to your religion, pour your energy into living your religion passionately and well.  Let them see the example in your life of the power of your religion or way of life.  “She is happy in spite of her struggles.  I want to live that way too.  he gives credit to her God.  I want to learn about her religion.”  Continuously learn your religion, read its scriptures, participate in its celebrations and fellowship and live by its teachings and the relationship it gives you with the Divine Harmony.  Pour your energy into living your religion.

That too is one of the secrets of the global peace in the global knowledge civilization.  Live your religion passionately and well, and live with genuine tolerance toward others of different faiths.  Religions, philosophies and ways of life, following the Principles of Harmony, will lead the world to peace and prosperity in the global knowledge civilization.

Live by the Principle of Harmony of L E T.  This is the secret to world peace.

If, hoping to be happy, you strike at others who also seek happiness, you will be happy neither here or hereafter.  If hoping to be happy, you do not strike at others who are also seeking happiness, you will be happy here and hereafter.

Dhammapada, 10: 131-132, Easwaran, p. 111

They are not following dharma who resort to violence to achieve their purpose.  But those who lead others through non-violent means, knowing right and wrong, may be called guardians of the dharma.

Christianity:  Principle of Harmony of L E T

Love the Lord your God with all you heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength… Love your neighbor as yourself.

Mark 12: 29-31 (NIV)

If you obey my commands, you will remain in my love, just as I have obeyed my Father’s commands and remain in his love.  I have told you this so that my joy may be in you, and your joy may be complete.

John 15: 10-11 (NIV)

Ye are the light of the world.  A city that is set on a hill cannot be hid.  Neither do people light a candle and put it under a bushel, but on a candlestick;  and it giveth light unto all in the house.  Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven.

Matthew 5:14-16 (KJV)

My prayer is not for them alone [the disciples].  I pray also for those who will believe in me through their message, that all of them may be one, Father, just as you are in me and I am in you. .

John 17: 20-21 (NIV)

But the Lord hardened Pharaoh’s heart, and he was not willing to let them go.

Exodus 10: 27 (NIV)

“All things have been committed to me by my Father.  No one knows the Son except the Father, and no one knows the Father except the Son and those to whom the Son chooses to reveal him.

“Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.  Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.

Matthew 11: 27-30 (NIV)

“No one knows about the day or hour, not even the angels in heaven, nor the Son, but only the Father.  As it was in the days Noah, so it will be at the coming of the Son of Man.  For in the days before the flood, people were eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage, up to the day Noah entered the ark; and they knew nothing about what would happen until the flood came and took them all away.  That is how it will be at the coming of the Son of Man.”

Matthew 24: 36-39 (NIV)

Then the men stepped forward, seized Jesus, and arrested him.  With that one of Jesus companions reached for his sword, drew it out and struck the servant of the high priest, cutting off his ear.

“Put your sword back in its place,” Jesus said to him, “for all who live by the sword will die by the sword.”

Matthew 26: 50-52 (NIV)

Then Jesus cried out, “When a man believes in me, he does not believe in me only, but in the one who sent me.  When he looks at me, he sees the one who sent me.  I have come into the world as a light, so that no one who believes in me should stay in darkness.

“As for the person who hears my words but does not keep them, I do not judge him.  For I did not come to judge the world, but to save it.  There is a judge for the one who rejects me and does not accept my words; that very word which I spoke will condemn him at the last day.”

John 12: 44-48 (NIV)

Islam:  Principle of Harmony of L E T

There shall be no compulsion in religion, for guidance and error have been clearly distinguished; then whoso rejects those who hinder people from following the right path and believes in Allah, has surely taken hold of a strong and dependable support which will never break.  Allah is all hearing, All-Knowing.

Qur’a’n 2: 257

Allah is the Lord of vast bounty, All-Knowing.  He grants wisdom to whom ever He pleases, and whoever is granted wisdom has indeed been granted abundant good, and none takes heed except those endowed with understanding.

Qur’an 18:30

Thou canst not make the dead hear, nor the deaf when they turn their backs; nor canst thou guide the blind out of their error.  Thou canst make only those hear who would believe in Our Signs and submit.

Should they contend with thee to associate with Me that of which thou hast no knowledge, obey them not in that, but keep up thy kindly cooperation with them in worldly matters, and follow the way of him who turns to Me in humility.

Judaism:  Principle of Harmony of L E T

Hearken O Israel:

YHWH our God, YHWH (is) One!

Now you are to love YHWH your God with all your heart, with all your being, with all your substance!

These words which, I myself command you today, are to be upon your heart.

You are to inculcate them in your children and are to speak of them in your sitting in your house and in your walking in the way, in your lying-down and in your rising-up.

You are to tie them as a sign upon your hand, and they are to be for bands between your eyes.

You are to write them upon the doorposts of your house and on your gates.

Deuteronomy 6:4-9 (Fox)

You are not to take-vengeance, you are not to retain-anger against the sons of your kinspeople-

but be loving to your neighbor (as one) like yourself,

I am YHWH!

Leviticus 19: 18 (Fox)

Naturalism:  Principle of Harmony of L E T

Ethical humanism involves [among others]:

* respect for the rights of others

* tolerance of other points of view and styles of life

* belief in free, open, pluralistic, and democratic society

Paul Kurtz in On The Barricades, Basil, Gehrman and Madigan, Eds., p. 73-74

But if a single individual devotes himself to individuation, he frequently has a positive contagious effect on the people around him.  It is as if a spark leaps from one to another.  And this usually occurs when one has no intention of influencing others and often when one uses no words.

M. L. Von Franz in Man and His Symbols, Carl G. Jung, Ed., p. 224

Here too a door has been shut against the illusion that one can completely understand another person and tell him what is right for him.

Taoism:  Principle of Harmony of L E T

Can you coax the mind from its wandering

and keep to the original oneness?

Can you let your body become

supple as a newborn child’s?

Can you cleanse your inner vision

until you see nothing but the light?

Can you love people and lead them

without imposing your will?

Can you deal with the most vital matters

by letting events take their course?

Can you step back from your own kind

and thus understand all things?

Giving birth and nourishing,

having without possessing,

acting with no expectations,

leading and not trying to control:

this is the supreme virtue.

Tao Te Ching No. 10

Express yourself completely,

then keep quiet.

Be like the forces of nature:

when it blows there is only wind;

when it rains there is only rain;

when the clouds pass, the sun shines through.

If you open yourself to the Tao,

you are at one with the Tao

and you embody it completely.

If you open yourself to insight

you are at one with insight

and you can use it completely.

If you open yourself to loss,

you are at one with loss

and you can accept it completely.

Open yourself to the Tao,

then trust your natural responses;

and everything will fall into place.

Tao Te Ching No. 23
